What is the Enneagram?

The word Enneagram comes from the Greek words ennea (nine) and gram (points or drawing). It refers to the nine different Enneagram Types, identified as numbers 1-9, and teaches the 9 different ways of being in and seeing the world.

Each number, or personality Type, has unique core motivations that drive specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

The insights of the Enneagram are useful for self-development, self-compassion, empathy, relationship building, effective communication, conflict resolution, and improvement of team dynamics.

ARE YOU A HEALTHY TYPE THREE?

Healthy Threes are team players who are comfortable in their own skin. They are confident in their value and they find worth outside of constant accomplishments. They inspire others to dream big and they take time to celebrate their accomplishments.

Average Threes feel the need to silently (or not so silently) compete with those around them for status. They deceive themselves into believing their worth is tied to their accomplishments and they have a hard time quitting their work when necessary.

Unhealthy Threes are vindictive and spiteful. They will often fabricate stories of their success and have a very hard time hearing negative feedback. They believe winning is only accomplished if everyone else is losing and they will go to great lengths to ensure they remain on top.

AN OVERVIEW OF TYPE THREES

Type Threes represent the human capacity for being productive, efficient, and achieving amazing things. They strive to excel in all areas of their life. At their best they are optimistic and inspiriting. At their worst they are competitive and vindictive.

Threes are driven by shame and a desire to have significance. Shame often feels like failure to the Three, so they have a tendency to overcompensate by being accomplishing as much as possible without taking the proper time to celebrate or relish in their achievements. As a result, their shame tends to come across as workaholism or relational disinterest.

THINGS THAT FEEL SHAMEFUL TO A TYPE THREE

  • Not receiving due credit
  • Association with an underperforming team or group
  • Coming in second place
  • Being corrected in front of others

Type Threes communicate in a ways that are upbeat, simple, and task-oriented. Their propensity for accomplishment makes them great leaders. When they are grounded, they are both encouraging and patient with others.

Type Threes take a problem-solving approach to conflict. They want to overcome the issue quickly to avoid inefficiencies and ensure everyone can quickly get back to work.

TAKE A BREAK

It is particularly challenging for you to rest. Rest is essential for optimal performance and therefore should have a place in your daily, weekly, monthly, and annual routines. Without proper doses of rest, time off is wasted on recovery, and the two should not be confused with each other. Take breaks throughout your day. Set a timer for when you need to stop working and then stop. Tomorrow is another day and the work will still be there waiting for you!
