What is the Enneagram?

The word Enneagram comes from the Greek words ennea (nine) and gram (points or drawing). It refers to the nine different Enneagram Types, identified as numbers 1-9, and teaches the 9 different ways of being in and seeing the world.

Each number, or personality Type, has unique core motivations that drive specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

The insights of the Enneagram are useful for self-development, self-compassion, empathy, relationship building, effective communication, conflict resolution, and improvement of team dynamics.

ARE YOU A HEALTHY TYPE SEVEN?

Healthy Sevens are joyful, thoughtful, and resilient. They are able to experience joy without feeling like they need to avoid grief. They are willing to stay with life’s uncomfortable feelings and experiences.

Average Sevens are distracted and looking for the next best thing. They stay busy multi-tasking as a means to keep their mind distracted from the disappointment that typically comes from missed expectations.

Unhealthy Sevens are scattered and frenetic. They often blame others for keeping them from having fun. They are prone to overindulgence and often struggle to practice delayed gratification.

AN OVERVIEW OF TYPE SEVEN

Type Sevens represent the human capacity for joy, enthusiasm, and spontaneity. They are optimistic, light-hearted, and jovial. At their best, they are excellent encouragers who can lift anyone out of the depths of darkness. At their worst, they cause whiplash with their ever-changing ideas and preferences.

Sevens are driven by a desire to avoid boring or uncomfortable experiences in life. Instead, they focus on all life has to offer. Sevens can put a positive spin on almost anything. They quickly reframe situations and point out the silver lining. As a result, their “glass overflowing” perspective can come across as naive, unrealistic, and overly-optimistic.

THINGS THAT TYPE SEVENS AVOID

  • Missing out on fun opportunities
  • Hard and fast commitments
  • Pessimism or negativity in other people
  • Heavy or serious conversations about themselves
  • Boring experiences or routines

Type Sevens communicate in the form of stories. They can sometimes lose their “track of mind” because they get distracted. They can sometimes get bored with others who talk “too long.” They are often surprised to learn that others don’t always take them seriously.

Type Sevens take a positive approach to conflict. They are prone to making jokes to maintain a light-hearted mood.

PRACTICE MEDITATION DAILY

It is particularly challenging to feel like you can physically sit still for longer than 15 seconds, much less teach your brain to be “still” – whatever that means- but this is essential for you. Your mind moves at the speed of light. As a result, you struggle to experience the freedoms that meditation offers: the ability to free yourself from a “more is better” mindset, the ability to free yourself from distraction, and the ability to free yourself from constantly living in your idealistic future.
