What is the Enneagram?

The word Enneagram comes from the Greek words ennea (nine) and gram (points or drawing). It refers to the nine different Enneagram Types, identified as numbers 1-9, and teaches the 9 different ways of being in and seeing the world.

Each number, or personality Type, has unique core motivations that drive specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

The insights of the Enneagram are useful for self-development, self-compassion, empathy, relationship building, effective communication, conflict resolution, and improvement of team dynamics.

ARE YOU A HEALTHY TYPE ONE?

Healthy Ones are able to practice both acceptance and discernment. They accept the things they cannot change, and they practice discernment to change the things they can.

Average Ones are dissatisfied with life. They are often fearful of making a mistake which leads to them being overly critical and correcting others according to their own standards of what is “good” or “right”. ⁠⁠

Unhealthy Ones are rigid and operate in extreme “Black and White” thinking. They become overly obsessive about the imperfections of others while turning a blind eye to their own hypocrisy.

AN OVERVIEW OF TYPE ONES

Type Ones represent the human capacity for integrity and goodness. They strive to be good in all aspects of their life. At their best they are wise and objective. At their worst they are harsh and critical.

Ones are driven by anger and a desire to control their environment by fixing the problems around them. Anger often feels like a bad or wrong emotion for so Ones have a tendency to push their anger down instead of processing the emotion fully. As a result the anger tends to come out in the form of resentment and intense frustration.

THINGS THAT FRUSTRATE A TYPE ONE

  • People who don’t do their fair share of the work
  • People who are consistently late
  • People who don’t follow the rules or the process
  • Laziness

Type Ones communicate in a ways that are fair, honest, and accurate. Their propensity for learning often makes them great teachers and trainers. When they are grounded they are both patient and creative with the teaching process.

Type Ones take a problem-solving approach to conflict. They don’t want to quickly understand the issue, find the best solution for parties, and get to work implementing the plan.

RELAX THE HARSH VOICE OF THE INNER CRITIC

Errors stand out to you, so it’s easy to focus all of your attention on what is going wrong or what needs fixing. Be intentional to notice what is going well and right in your relationships, projects, and experiences. Consider what you want to leverage based on what is already working well.
