What is the Enneagram?

The word Enneagram comes from the Greek words ennea (nine) and gram (points or drawing). It refers to the nine different Enneagram Types, identified as numbers 1-9, and teaches the 9 different ways of being in and seeing the world.

Each number, or personality Type, has unique core motivations that drive specific thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

The insights of the Enneagram are useful for self-development, self-compassion, empathy, relationship building, effective communication, conflict resolution, and improvement of team dynamics.

ARE YOU A HEALTHY TYPE FIVE?

Healthy Fives are patient and wise. They are able to detach from emotional situations without having to detach. They are generous with their time, energy, and resources. They are able to actively participate in the world along with observing the world.

Average Fives are continually seeking ways to recharge from the overwhelming demands of life. They are frustrated when others don’t take the same amount of time to research and patiently come to a sound conclusion before acting impulsively based on emotions.

Unhealthy Fives are private, detached and distrusting of others. They withdraw in order to maintain a self-sufficient and comfortable lifestyle. They seek power through knowledge and are disconnected from doing the things they set out to do.

AN OVERVIEW OF TYPE FIVES

Type Fives represent the human capacity for intelligence and objectivity. They strive to ensure they are capable, knowledgeable, and competent. At their best, they are wise, curious, and patient. At their worst, they are emotionally stingy and aloof.

Fives are driven by fear and desire to have information. Fives often combat fear with knowledge, so they spend a significant amount of time researching, processing, and detaching from their fear. As a result, their fear tends to portray them as disinterested, emotionally unavailable, or superior.

THINGS THAT CAUSE FEAR FOR A TYPE FIVE

  • A belief that they have minimal intellect to offer
  • Demands from others
  • Betrayal of trusted personal information
  • When their insights are not valued or respected

Type Fives communicate in facts. If they are particularly knowledgeable about a situation, they can speak in paragraph form. If they are not knowledgeable, they will give brief data-driven sentences.

Type Fives take a problem-solving approach to conflict. They are particularly gifted in their ability to detach from their emotions and are more comfortable sharing their thoughts than they are sharing their emotions.

CONNECT WITH YOUR BODY

It is particularly challenging for you feel comfortable in your body. You spend most of your time in your mind, and it’s important to remember there is more to you than your intellect. Schedule regular and daily time to connect with your body. Try not to listen to an audiobook, podcast, or other mentally engaging resources – the point is to engage with your body, not to be distracted from engaging with it. Examples of engaging with your body include taking a walk, yoga, stretching, focused breathing, cardio, weightlifting, etc.
